These are the comments received on the various pages on my site. I wrote a program to retrieve them automatically so they are verbatim and completely uncensored.

I was/am troubled by the ones that are offended by the strong language. I really don't want to assault anyone's sensibilities but I pretty much write the way I speak (in private and unmixed company). And I just don't know how to make the case against the "enemy" more articulately.

I will say in my defense though - AMPLE WARNING is given right at the top of the Main Page. Only those who have surfed into a page directly could have been caught unaware.

Every one that had an address attached (only a couple) has been answered. If yours is one of those and you don't want your address listed here, let me know and I'll see that it's deleted on future updates. And I'm gratified by the ones that appreciated the efforts here. Thanks again for stopping by.

Bleech - Leave this form of "entertainment" to hate radio. I've lived in small towns with you so called "neo-cons." All you "victims" can do all day is whine all day about Hillary Clinton and those 18 yr hippies that may want to stop clearcutting of your only tourist attraction. Yet if your local fundalmentalist preacher is cought child molesting all you can do is yell "forgiveness". Law and order are only for the migrant labor you have doing your dirty work. And for those of you living in big cities, you're just proof that you can take the trash out of the trailer but you can't take the trailer out of the trash.

Excellent - Fast food for the brain. Damn few people sit down to read a book on philosophy or politics nowadays. So you're going to be our Ben Franklin for the 21st Century???? By the way, the world doesn't lack the common man. What it lacks are people who will admit to subscribe to being common. Common is not a BAD WORD, but the universities keep spitting out MA's and Phd's that can't tie shoes or tell time. I think Gosta (whatthehell does it mean?) would do our society a great service by elevating the "Common Man" to an ideal to be achieved. 'Twould be a much more intelligible world if we could do that!

Excellent - I have never so thoroughly enjoyed a web site!! I got here initially because of my love for my pond and waterfall, and am I glad I came. This Sshtuff would put a smile on a mime! I don't know what you do for a living (commercial fisherman I'm guessing) but if you're not extremely hapopy at that, you've got a very enviable talent for seeing right through these liberal world savers. I also bet you enjoy Rush!

Excellent - I've stuck to the defaulted Excellent just because you have a voice. So many pages perused have no real voice. I just wanted to get my page up and going and then my son actually did it. I was overjoyed and now that I've been surfing and discovering, I realize that it's time to study HTML and redo the page to really reflect who I am. If you teach nothing else on this page, you have taught all. I had hoped that the Net would prove to be a place where brains (with info inside) would empty their experiences onto these pages and create a priceless education unequalled by even the missing library at Alexandria. Excellent - Well, certainly not your typical Sunday morning let's go to meeting topics. I did not know that Lavallette had such a diverse knowledge living in among the "hallowed" and I have a neighbor who earned his full share before puberty. Enough about the diabolical bullshit, great page and how are you doing? I still have not read the "Fallone Files" in depth, but at face value, a consultant taps to the tune of the drummer. I will be back to you with my detail observations. I am in MArmora this weekend. Ginny is in town and I am down here in Marmora working on her "Honey DO List". I will be back to your Page to read the articles and positions in depth because the subjects interest me. I see in today's paper that Governor Christie vetoed the Russian factory ship setting up business in the Deleware Bay. The commercials in Cape May are pissed, but I believe the macks, whiting and ling have been raped. Too many New England, Carolinia and foreign boats "skinning the bunk". I will catch up with you soon. So for now, a belated Happy Valentine's Day and have a great weekend.......... John Corney (jcorney@aol.com)

Just Okay - I think your a bit negative about some of these people. Yes they may be what you say they are, but attitude is what shapes everything in the world. I'm not saying to be positive about negative things, but not to become negative because of them. It would be better to be positive and use that positiveness to change things. You'll be much more effective in anything you do. Cause more negative you are about something, the only worse it will get. Don't take this wrong :) I am just giving some friendly advice from what I have learnt recently. Just Okay - There's something fishy about this whole page. One-dimensional? Well......I guess every issue deserves a hearing. And just between you and I: I can be a mother-fucking, shitty ass-hole whenever I choose, but that language kind offends me when it is not really necessary and essentially out of context. I mean, if a person is addressing serious issues, who needs it? Now if you were, for example, writing modern fiction, you might think you need to throw in conversation like that in order to be authentic. Perhaps the people I associate with are not trashy enough, but it just seems out of place everywhere I go. But....who am I to say? Everybody must do their own thing, I guess.

Building a Pond
Excellent - I would like to thank you for providing so much useful information in one article. My name in Steve Clerkin and I live in Hamilton NJ. I haven't built my pond yet but I hope to break ground this spring. Your the first "ponder", not busness, from New Jersey I've come across. If you don't mind I would like to keep in touch by e-mail. Building a Pond
Excellent - Well....I am building a 15 x 8 foot one with some sort of waterfall combined with a stream gonna dig 4 feet if possible renting an auger "today" to greatly speed diging. (there is no access to the back yard large enough for a backhoe) I think the header pool will be made from the dirt that is dug out, and will be just used for planting. I hope that I hit no big rocks... and ifin I do well I guess I'll just have to dig around em or somethin. ANyway I am a 20 y/o male in upstate South Carolina.... I live with my Mothers parents and 2 uncles.....all of them are retired and or disabled so that means its all me, and I am to take over most of the heavy yard work from this summer on...they need somwhere to relax....I think a large pond with moving water and beautifull Flora/Fauna will be place for them to do just that. I would like to correspond with you to some extent... I understand that its sprinng and that you are probably busy. If you have the time to respond my e-mail address is Snakewings@aol.com MaD MoNk™ ( thats alt +0153 in a chat room)

Building a Pond
Excellent - Dear G.H. Lovgren, It's a very interesting pond web page since I found a lot of detailed informations which help my building pond project. My name is Andy, and I'm building a pond in my backyard. I have a concern about the bio-filter which I would be very appreciate if you could please take a moment to advise me. I'm building a 1000 gallons koi pond. I'm confusing about the choice between a pre-built biofilter and a homemake one. >From your experiences, which one should I choose? I really like the barrel bio-filter you built, so I'm thinking about building one like that. Could you please advise me what size of the filter I need to have? Should we concern about the fish's predators(cats, dogs,...)? My email address is: hatran@flute.aix.calpoly.edu Thank you very much in advance for your time and consideration. Andy

Building a Pond
Excellent - Great Page!! My name is Clint, and I'm a new pond junkie in the making. I just completed, well, just started completing my first pond this sept. I wish I had monitored the water meter to know the true volume of the pond. I was told it's about 1600 gal. I use a little giant sump to run my falls and a small cedar water wheel. No plants yet (I Know, not good!!) I did find some kind of 2in. thick moss in the hills in a waterfall and transplanted it to my falls, it was like a matt. I've got 1 large comet, 1 fantail, 1 black moore, about 10 feeders and 2, 3$ Koi. My filter is a charcoal canister with a uv light. seems to do the job. I need to know what type of plants will winter, I live in western Oregon, we do get some cold weather but it's mostly wet and above freezing. I'm fairly new to this computer too! But, I do know my email is cboyer@molalla.net I marked your page so I'll be able to find you agian. I got some good ideas for some additions from your page, I'll just have to wait till my son outgrows his swingset, I need the room!!!

Building a Pond
Excellent - Great page just in the proccess of designing a new pond at a new house, hopefully as you say better than my last! Hear what you say about filters, the more the better! Over in the UK we can get hold of large header tanks quite easy they're used as header tanks on our houshold water systems, make exellent bio filters. Love your waterfall gives me plenty of ideas for mine. Also thinking of installing a bottom drianer to "slush" out the bottom of the pond, but it may cause probs with the gravell bed at the bottom, more planning needed here! Good pondin!!! Paul.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Great page. I just built my first pond this year and new I was hooked when my wife became jealous. I'm definately a confirmed "ponder" because I am wwriting to ask advise on my next pond. Mine unfortunately developed a large leak from a neighborhood raccon and I fear it will be repeated not matter how many time s I patch the liner. What I'd like to do is build a cement pond but don't know how to start. Seeing as it will be a permanent structure I rather not make any "stupdi" mistakes. Any good books out there on this subject? Thanks for your help. Rdinnocenzo@genzyme.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Great page. We just bought a house that has an empty little pond. The pump is burnt out because the former owners just left if going until the pond emptied. The motor is locked. I know next to nothing about ponding, but after getting this house and empty pond, something tells me it is time to learn. Your page is the first one I found that was useful in helping me get some idea of what the heck to do. I think I need to read more and more before I do, but I was so enthusiastic after reading your page, that I plan to move faster in educating myself. Thanks for the enjoyable and useful read. Building a Pond
Excellent - Greetings, just a note to let you know I enjoyed your pond site. Got a chuckle more than once. It was helpful, entertaining, low in fat and colesterol etc etc.... (how do you spell colesterol anyway??) I'd be glad to send ya an e-mail but darned if I can find yer address on this page. Is it there somewhere, sort of like a "find elmo" page or what?? Lots of hard work on the pond and this page as well. Thanks a bunch! I'm starting small since I can't get my son to do all the work :-) Enjoyed your filter ideas and will more than likely use some of them. Building a Pond
Excellent - Hi Gosta! Excellent informative site! I am in the process of building a small outdoor pond from the kids old swimming pool, you know the plastic jobs you buy for about $20 or more, instead of using a pond liner. Would this be acceptable. I have ways of building it up off of the ground, and it has steps, so that it will make a nice little water fall. I am from nj also, exit 7a, Hamilton, NJ. Exit 109 must be the GSP. Any information will be most appreciated. Thank you. Wilson email address: cudri@erols.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Hi Gosta, I just plastered your web address to the alt.rec.ponds group. Just dropped in so I could bookmark you site again ;-) crashes are a PITA. How about sending me the syntax and icon for the abreviated version of the pond ring logo. They got me set up with the 2 big akward square boxes and it takes up too much real estate on my site. Well... Gosta, if you ever need to know how to inject a fish with antibotics medicine just let me know. I learned all that and more this winter taking care of a couple of nice 14 inch koi! What an experience! They, Oscar and Goldie are well on the way to recovery now but had I not treated them when I did they would most likely be in fish heaven by now. Site looks better all the time. Now even been on mine in months till just tonight to get your web address to pass on to a group. Been busy-busy-busy. Take care, No replay is needed but of course I always love hearing form my favorite ol'e swede... grin. Dusty@i-link-2.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - I am currently looking at building a KOI pond. In short, always wanted one, recent relocation to Denver allows me the chance to do it. There is a space in my back yard that is hals circle with about a 15 foot radius, should be big enough. I am consenced about wintering, I have heard of others having success leaving fish in the pond, and others not, since I want to see this fish readliy/easily, my depth most likely will not exceed 40 inches - Will freeze in Denver) As far as the need for filtration, I think I have a good understanding of that - had a reef tank for 4 yrs before the relocation. One big ? - I heard roofing liners were toxicx to the fish, did you do anything special to pretreat it? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Excellent Web Site! PSIROC@AOL.com Patrick

Building a Pond
Excellent - I am starting a backyard pond this summer ;in the beach area of the Los Angeles. I had one before that was 20 ft by 20 feet, and it lasted four years till I moved and the next idiot didn't keep it up. Jim Crowell kool57@earthlink.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - I appreciate the friendly tone and useful tips. I'll be using some of them. Also the contacts, though I haven't checked them out yet. I had few sources and the leveling device is something I was looking for. Currently I don't have so much a pond as a hole in the ground. I have the roof runoff rigged to run into the pond. Though the pond is maybe 3000 gallons (VERY rough guess) it will probably fill in a day or two of rain. Overflow is my current interest/predicament. The solution I am contemplating is called a swale, which is a ditch dug on the exact contour of the land (ie, level), with the spoil on the downhill side. Leaving a low place in the pond edge will allow overflow to leave there fill the swale and soak into the ground. Do you think fish would survive in this environment with no other filtration? I don't want to be dependent on mechanical/electrical devices. We have a lot of rain, though it can be as much as 6 weeks between once or twice a year, and it snows maybe once a year (not very cold). The pond is almost six feet deep in one place, with the idea that that would be a safe place from the local herons, so temperature and predators are handled, I think. It is in a shady spot, probable temperature will be near 55, maybe 60 sometimes in summer, mostly nearer 50 or below most of the year. Do you know people who have unfiltered ponds like this? If you care to answer, my email is duane@newageretailer.com.

Could you please email me with your answers..... at Soln76 or WSasainboy... thank you very much....

Building a Pond
Excellent - I don't have to change the "Excellent" check mark. Great Job! As a chemist, the Fe joke was very funny!

Building a Pond
Excellent - I found this to very helpful. GOOD JOB!!!

Building a Pond
Excellent - I had to print your pages out because they make just too much sense! I especially want to try your underwater filtration system (undergravel fish tank idea). We have dug the hole and stopped. I think it's too small :) Thanks for your ideas and for sharing them.

Building a Pond
Excellent - I have 2 ponds, 1 150 gal and 1 -500 gal. great to see info on the www thanks greg

Building a Pond
Excellent - I have been looking for just this kind of information for the last year. I was starting to think I was going to be stuck dealing with a "prefab" setup this summer, but you've really offered some fantastic ideas. I have been preparing a plot of land behind my home for the last year for just such a thing. I'll send you an image if things work out. If I can ever be of any help at all especially in the computer dept., converting video or photo to GIF format or whatever you would like please let me know. I love to contribute to these kinds of things! My email is: trixterd@hotmail.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - I have suffered through three summers of green water and very limited visibility to view and enjoy my fish. I am currently plannning on constructing a biological filter based on your excellent instructions. I would like to integrate the water return from the filter into my current waterfall and am not quite sure how to accomplish that. Any suggestions????? My name is gary doviak and I live in upstate ny near albany. e-mail me at greenacres 23.5@juno.com thank you for an excellent article!

Building a Pond
Excellent - I just built and added the Swede filter to my pond. Now I just need to clean out the old stuff that accumulated on the bottom, and I hope to have a better quality pond. My parts list and estimated costs were: 50 gallon plastic barrel from a plastic fabricator (holds their raw material supplies) $10 Marine grade through hulls (from West Marine) 2 @ 1.5", 1 @ 2", and 1#3/4" $40.00 2 PVC valves to divert the flow from the water fall feed (good builders supply store) $26.00 1 PVC valve for the drain $15.00 hose for the inlet, two outlets, and drain (Home Depot $35) misc glues, silicone, plastic stand, lava rock (plastic store & home depot) $30 Estimated total cost with tax about $170. Time required, less than a day to build, though I went to 5 stores for all of the necessary supplies. Please let me know if you have other good information. My pond is only three months old. My email address is paulk@costofquality.com Thank you Paul

Building a Pond
Excellent - I just wanted to say I really enjoyed your page on ponding. I do have a idea you might want to try, it is using water hyacinthus in a pot and running the water thru it. It is the only filter system I have running in my pond. you can see the bottom no problem. Three feet deep shallow end. Works really good.

Building a Pond
Excellent - I know nothing about ponds, but you do a great job describing what you've done in an understandable and interesting way. You should really consider adding at least one picture of your pond; I'm sure other visitors would love to see it. Take care!

Building a Pond
Excellent - I liked it. I've been looking for information on pond filters (I just put in a pond but haven't added the filter or waterfall yet) and I like your design. I was worried about the price I'd have to pay for this and was really hoping I'd find something I could build myself. thanks for th info..

Building a Pond
Excellent - I liked your homepage. I'm a biological engineering student and I have to design a fish pond for my final. Your page was extremely helpful!! Thank you very much. Kimberley S. Hill Louisiana State University

Building a Pond
Excellent - I read your entire article. I found it very worthwhile. My wife and I are planning to install a pond in our backyard, but the articles I read in magazines were lacking innovative ways to build a pond without a lot of expense. I feel very comfortable with this information. I feel I want to leave work and start on it now. Thanks for the information. If you care to share any more ideas with me, my e-mail address is rcarrier@ES.com. Thanks, Rob Carrier

Building a Pond
Excellent - I really enjoyed this info. The way it was written made my day. I am considering doing a pond but wasn't sure what all was involved. I couldn't believe here is was - do this and this and this. Thank you. I especialy liked Iron Ernie. I have 4 cats of my own. We live on 3 acres where there will be visits from creatures like deer and raccoons. I place water out now for the critters but I used a"wrong" type of container and came out one morn. to find a baby owl floating face down. I hate it when that happens. I'm told raccoons eat fish. Damn. We had a flower bed built that I think may just be a nicer "pond". Your information is so full of humor. I truly enjoyed reading this. I copied it and will use it as my Pond Bible. Thanks Again!!!! From Bulverde Texas.

Building a Pond
Excellent - I really enjoyed your atticals. Please E-mail me - I would like to ask you some questions. Craig North craig.north@banctec.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - I really enjoyed your pond page. I have been looking for info on building my own biofilter and I like your's. I would like to know what type of fittings you used on the barrel to make your connections water-tight. Nathan Sherlock (jsherlock@worldnet.att.net) the

Building a Pond
Excellent - I really like your filteration ideas. I will soon be building my lava-barrel filter and will be using your ideas. I am not sure however about how you attach your small "power heads" to the underwater pvc pipes. Would appreciate more info. lmeeks@stlmo.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - I really liked it. I'm reading all of the pond web sites because I'm going to build a pond this spring. I want to make sure I don't make any major mistakes. I really like the home-made filter stuff. Your barrel idea is great, but would stick out like a sore thumb in my yard. My current idea is to use a Rubbermaid tub with a lid in a similar fashion and build a wooden bench over it to camouflage it. Your plumbing ideas really helpd me out. I think I will start building this thing soon. One thing I don't remember reading is what pump you are using and how you plumb it to the filter. I am wondering about this. I live in Rhode Island, so any plumbing that would have to stay outside would have to be fairly weather resistant. Or would I turn off my filter and take it inside in the winter? Thanks, John Pavao jcpavao@ix.netcom.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - I wish you would invest in the scanner. Sounds like a great seat up.

Building a Pond
Excellent - I'm dumber than the fish I'm trying to grow, so your page is just the ticket for me. I was looking for some simple directions on building a filter for my small pond (4' x 8")and found just waht I needed here. It's also obvious we have the same middle name too...CHEAP. Great page! Building a Pond
Excellent - I,ve been searching for three days on internet for info on costruction of the 5 gallon bucket w/lava rock (a tip given to me by a local pet store). Guess today was my lucky day. Thanks for the info. From alwright@mylink.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - It's great reading especially for the new ponders. My question to you is how or if you ever had to clean out the gravel bed in the pond, sooner or later you have to clean it for the flow of your UG filter to work properly. I had the same type of filtration for a 55 gallons aquariums and agree that it's cheap and works well. One thing to keep in mind is that if you want to plant anything in the gravel bed, the root will be disturbed constantly by the flow of the filtration therefore it may not be growing in top form. By the way where o you buy the 55 gallon drums? Please feel free to email me at pvo@shl.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Ive checked out many pages but yours is by far the most informative, thanks and keep up the good work.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Just putting in our "first" pond...know it wont be the last! ;-) Thanks for all the great info!! Susan susandt@nwinfo.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - Just what another retired old geezer was looking for. I took a yearning for a pond this early summer and by the middle of July it was dug, no son-no grandson close, just me and the wife and we placed a 300 gallon RubberMaid Cow Trough in the hold. Filled it nearly full and added lilies other water plants and a small filter recommended for 1200 gallon, but I don't believe it ( I have 4 inside aquaruims 1 goldfish and 3 tropicals). Never did see any ammonia, nitrite or nitrates. I like your UGF idea. I went for the biowheels and ugfs inside. In one tank I had only gravel and UGF and when I pulled the gravel, the tank went on a big-g-g-g ammonia spike. The biowheels were doing nothing evidently. Your page--I give it better than Excellent, how about *WOW* Ed edbrown@ebicom.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - LIKED READING .THINKING OF BUILDING A POND AROUND 36"DEEP AND ABOUT 12 FEET ACROSSHAD THOUGHT OF FILTERS AND HAVENT DECIDED ON WHAT TO USE FOR FILTERS YET BUT I AGREE ON OVERKILL ON FILTERATION.MY 100 GAL SALT TANK FILTERS AROUND 1500 GAL HR AND IT IS DOING VERY WELL. Building a Pond
Excellent - Plan on building my first pond, glad I found your site. I live in Michigan and am afraid I'm going to have to go with a very small scale pond due to the short summer season. I have heard that it is quite expensive to heat a pond thru the winter. What do you think? My e-mail is (hawgwild@hotmail.com) I am a fisherman at heart. Thank you for your time............................

Building a Pond
Excellent - Please use the same words in your descriptions that you used in your diagrams. For instance, is discharge pipe the same as the "drain" pipe? Thank you for all your help. I'm planning to build a new pond, and my present pond is always full of algae, despite a filter, pump and waterfall. we live in St. Pete, Florida, and sunlight makes algae grow like you wouldn't believe!

Building a Pond
Excellent - Pond section is quite good. It seems you understand how the ecology of the pond works, but it astounds me that you cannot upcale that thinking to the rest of the world. Must admit that I just scanned the rest of your home page. God it looks like a big pile of Rush limbough crap. Of course this is a free society and we are both allowed to believe what we wish. Maybe you are right. Personally I doubt it, but see the preceeding line. Good luck and this is JM2CW. Don't need a reply but my address is sbeavin@serv.net Sam

Building a Pond
Excellent - Question: I have a hole 5ft diameter and 2 ft deep I plan to cement it with wire reinforcing. My problem is different views on what pump or filter system I need, it's all become a bit confusing. I plan to have fish and plants I don't want a waterfall or perhaps any sort of water feature. Any ideas?? I liked the look of the under gravel filtering system what sort of maintenance is involved and would this duit my needs? Thanks for any help you can give. Building a Pond
Excellent - THANKS!!!!!!!My pond may actually make it now. Was trying to use my swimming pool pump-just kept loosing its prime. So my water is in pretty bad shape (green). How long will it take when I get the filtering system going to clear the water? My pond is 15'x28'x18"? Would appreciate any input or suggestions. BWilson at: fbmw@gte.netP.S.-Where do you find a sump pump large enough?

Building a Pond
Excellent - Terrific site! Really. My teenage son has become enamored of building a pond here in Phoenix where the digging ain't easy and I've been encouraging him to think about it. You don't mention hitting sewer lines while you're digging though... jlarue@newtimes.com

Building a Pond

(grin) We are starting our pond construction this spring after massive research on the internet and at the library. I've bookmarked your web site because I know once we start the digging we will have hundreds of questions to email to you We live in NE in zone 5, so normally we have some pretty harsh winters so will we be able to keep our goldfish in year round or not. Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks for your time and effort.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks, This is the first article I have read about pond filters that I really understood. I have had a pond for 2 years with no filter and have lots of baby fish this year ,but the water is so green its hard to see the fish unless you are feeding them and they come to the top. We are going to add a filter so we can enjoy them more. Mary Case jcase@bayou.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks, I did everything wrong the first time and in process of rebuilding, I think I'll try three of your filters in a row!!

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks, I'm just digging the main hole, so the voice of experience is much appreciated. Thanks for the filtration tips.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks, wife making me a ditch digger this year. Needed the info to show her we couldn't just dig a hole and throw in a filter and be happy. Seems like overkill but the long run benfits must make it worth while.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thanks,I own a pet store and I'm going to build your filter cheaper and better than I can order wholesale.

Building a Pond

Building a Pond
Excellent - This is a wonderful page. If you would like I have a scanner and would be glad to scan any pictures you have of the filter system for you. Please let me know. :) Kevins@Vnet.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - This looks really interesting. Thanks for posting it. A friend of mine has a set up similar to this and her only problem is the bird population growing and reducing the fish population!

Building a Pond
Excellent - This page has been especially helpful and informative-keep up the good work -brent harris

Building a Pond
Excellent - This was very helpful. I'm just starting to design my 1st pond.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Thought that your page was brilliant. Now going to upgrade my filtration unit (a commercially bought one) to encompass the ideas you have illustrated. ie the barrel as I have two in my garden doing nothing. Present pond is 1800 gallons with a pump lifting @ 1600 gph, also UV filter. Blanket weed is the main problem at present, but at least to our surprise it is providing a cover for the baby goldfish we didn't know we had! At least we got something for nothing! Will check in on your site periodically to view possible updates.Considering another pond now, at least 2000 gallons. The first one is an additioon this year only and has settled down well, but I wish now I had made it bigger.Everyone I have met says the same. Regards and best wishes from Liverpool, England. Building a Pond
Excellent - Very good info. Could you please add the locations of the pumps? Thanks a lot. fuentes@gene.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Very good web page, excellent technical advise and not a bad sense of humor :-) Suggestion: Break the page up into several smaller ones or consider using a three section frame top for title, one side for a menu of topics opposite larger side for the text. This will break up the length of the page, some people will not read a long page but will sit and read 10 short pages. I broke my web page up from work and got rave reviews. Question - what type of filtering system do you suggest for a prefab deck/patio kit. It's 3 sq. ft. and holds about 35 gals. of water? akorbel@aol.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - Very helpful. I am a beginner and I learned. Thanks

Building a Pond
Excellent - Very nice - Thank you!

Building a Pond
Excellent - WOW!! Thank you for helping us not so creative minds feel like we can do this. I know this took some time and lots of trail and error. Thanks for sharing.

Building a Pond
Excellent - Water treatment I have used a product called Start Right in my own pond and in my parents pond (1000+ gals) with much success. It dechlorinates and salinizes the water. The fish seem much healthier. It is available at most tropical fish stores. Follow the label directions but I would suggest using half the recommended dosage with goldfish.

Building a Pond
Excellent - We have about a 3000 gallon liner pond with a waterfall. We also live in NJ and right now the pond is going through the "green stage". We have a 100 gallon filter which has netting and foam along with lava rock. I'm going to try to make some changes to make it more similar to yours. However, don't you lose your beneficial bacteria when you flush your filter? I've been told we should not wash out our lava rocks. Also, you say you put white gravel at the bottom of your pond. Don't you find that makes it more difficult to net out leaves and debris which fall to the bottom? I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks, Rose. My email adress is mustof@worldnet.att.net

Building a Pond
Excellent - We plan to try the underwater filter this spring.

Building a Pond
Excellent - We started on our pond this last fall. A backhoe was brought in to dig the hole, roughly 3' deep and 10' irregular. Finding your web page now will save us a lot of trial and error and money. Thank You!! email: Kruiser@eznet.com

Building a Pond
Excellent - We've got a small pond (50 gallons) and are concerned about our four goldfish during the winter months. Should we continue to run our filter? Or can we put a pvc pipe in the pond for air? Someone suggested a basketball sitting on top of the water so that the pond doesn't freeze totally. We're new to this and don't want to lose our babies. Thanks for any info you can pass on! gcrooke@hrsa.dhhs.gov

Building a Pond

Building a Pond
Excellent - You have done a lot of work, and made a yeoman's effort to help others. Thanks a bunch! Know I will use your filtration ideas. Woould have liked to have known some more about your choice of pumps. I am thinking of an external sequence pump, but have heard Zoeller and Becket and Cal have pumps with attached biofiltration submersible units.

Building a Pond
Excellent - You put together a pretty comprehensive pond site. It was very good. I am particularly interested in the filters. I am looking for a pressurized filter so that I can have it below the level of my pond. Any ideas? If so, let me know. (opie_jones@msn.com) Thanks, Erik

More on pumps, would be helpfull, and using them, i.e using two cheap ones, one on a timer to cut cost, and with little head, efficent... Overall I thank you for the good info!!! I'm going to build a big pond, 30` x 30 liner.... later Rob.

Building a Pond
Excellent - excellent site, your info on the filters was exactly what I was looking for, our pond is about 1500 gallons, do you think a 25 gallon plastic drum would be large enough, we are rather limited for space in an area where we could "hide" a 45 gallon drum. Building a Pond
Pretty Good - From one who professes to know absolutely nothing about pond building, I think I just completed the complete encyclopedia on pond building. It was very informative and the pictures and drawings were invaluable. Thanks for the hard work you put into that. I still am not aware where I should put the sump pump. Should it be at the furtherest point from the water input into the waterfall? Anyway, I will certainly put your knowledge to good use in my pond on the side of the hill.

Building a Pond
Pretty Good - I am interested in designing and building decorative low-maintainance waterfalls. Do you have any suggestions for me? I would be interested in any information that you could provide please e-mail me at Lslivin877@aol.com. Thanks. Lee.

Building a Pond
Pretty Good - I learn alot by reading this page!

Building a Pond
Pretty Good - I've built your biological filter but wonder about not covering it. Should you not cover them? I'm concerned about something plugging the outlet overnight and draining my pond.

Building a Pond
Pretty Good - Illustrations??? YES???

Building a Pond
Pretty Good - In reading your comments and suggestions I find it very helpful in putting in my second pond with the addition of a waterfall and stream. I have been into aquirums for atleast 15years and your undergravel system is a first that I have seen used for a pond and is a graet idea. One complaint is the use of the rubber roofing for the liner. It is toxic and can and will harm fish over the years. You might want to add this in your notes. Thank you

Building a Pond 0997 Report
Excellent - Gosta This is my first year for "The Pond" and overall I guess it did OK. My pond is roughly 10'wide and 16'long. Modified kidney shape, with three different levels. Depths actually, for different plants. Deepest part is 23" (at 24" our local code is you need a fence around it) a shelf at 12", and another shelf at 7" or so. A 1200 gph little giant pump, that died after two months. The warranty repair place said it had small pieces of rock in it? I had it in a basket with volcanic rock under it to act as a pre-filter. It's pretty abrasive and so I switched to small round gravel. I have six koi that doubled in size this season. I put in 8 twenty-five cent gold fish that started kicking off almost immediately. I fished out five or six floater and never saw the other two? Two lilly pads, one I grew from a root/bulb type thing I bought at home depot for 2 bucks. It grew 8 or 10 leaves about silver dollar pancake size and now is turning color like the fall leaves. The other I bought at a local nursery that is getting into pond/bogg plants. Thirty dollars. Came with ten or so large pads, and bloomed with a pink flower that lasted about two weeks. Hycinth that was given to me by another ponder is doing well. I havent finished landscaping the pond yet. I'm wondering if the fish will survive a Michigan winter? Oh! Almost forgot I sprang for a Cypro (sp?) filter. It works but what a rip-off. for the size they said I needed I paid two-hundred bucks. It must have all of twenty bucks worth of plastic and foam in it. This is getting too long. I will send you e-mail and a picture of the pond later. My E-mail address is fredg454@concentric.net if you have any words of wisdom on end-of-year pond advice. Thanks again for the great site.

Excellent - 2nd house for this lifetime; 2nd pond. After the first, started in 1987, said I wouldn't do it again. 2000 gallons of clear water, and wildlife to match. Need my head examined, but love the challenge, beauty, and Frusteration... Tom sume@earthlink.net

Building a Pond 0997 Report
Excellent - A great 'homespun' alternative to the wildly expensive brochures, catalogues and garden centres out there. I'll be building a pump based on your design in the very near future, and once it's in I'll let you know how it goes. Regards, Johan from Holmbury St. Mary in Surrey, England.

Building a Pond 0997 Report
Excellent - Great, enjoyed reading about your pond. Sounds like you did have good luck with your pond this year. Me too. I'm thinking of expanding or building another one. Can't make up my mind. Reading stories like yours gives me ideas--keep them coming! One suggestion, however, change the color of your pre-selection above. I can hardly read it.....

Building a Pond 0997 Report
Excellent - I found your artical very intresting. But I have one question. How do you move around in the pond to set your pants? I would think the stones on bottom would damage the liner as you walk on them. Please reply to--JOHNLFARREY@msn.com THANK YOU

Excellent - Enjoyed your site very much. I found the plans for a lava rock filter on another site before I found yours so am in total agreement with you. Plan to try the UG next spring. Thanx for all the help. (without u knowing it) baldbob@scan.missouri.org

Building a Pond Letters
Excellent - Excellent is the perfect rating for this page. Very informative with lots of laughter. Keep up the great work.

Building a Pond Letters
Excellent - Gosta- After reading through all of your pond letters on filteration feeding etc. I decided to pass along the conclusion I came to finally. Stop worring and fretting. It is a given that newbies are gonna win and loose a few fish and plants too. I believe that some green is not gonna kill the fish ( us maybe) but hey the fish are placed in a not so natural enviroment and while we all do out best to provide a health place for them, I would say it probably upsets us more than the fish. As long as the water tests OK for everything, don't sweat it. When I first started ponding I cleaned the filter weekly just on general principle and did more harm than good. I found out later that I had been washing away the natural bio gunk that the pond needed to balance itself. Live and Learn... Dusty PS I will be forwarding you a site for pond forums where folks exchange ideas etc. it is a good one!

Excellent - I have a pond in a very shady spot under a silver Maple. It is three years old and fish and two large red slider turtles wintered over. What plants would grow in my oval 15' by 4' pond. This is in philadelphia. Toopik@aol.com

Excellent - I just had a blast reading your pages. Informative and fun to read. Also appeals to my sense of humour and economy. I'm getting set to turn the kids' trampoline pit into a pond (11' x 12' x 2'). I've been running aquariums for years but have never tried ponds. Canadian winters tend to be hard on whatever you leave laying out in the yard. Thanks Norm (nblais@rockyview.ab.ca)

Excellent - We are fabricators of PPL-24 liners. I noticed one of your writers found us, (1996) and you were not familar with our products. We supply our liners for .33 cents a square foot, F.O.B. Bend, OR. Our liners are in fact superior to 40 mil HDPE in strengh, and the UV resistance suppasses that of PVC liners. Please take a moment to look at our web page and spec sheet on this product, and your writers will have a new link to quality, fish safe, affordable liners. Thank you for your time, I really enjoyed your page. Jan Elliott Bend Tarp & Liner, Inc 800-280-0712 www.empnet.com/bentarp/

Building a Pond Letters
Excellent - We put in the barrel filter you described w/out the lava rock as our local pond expert also told us it wouldn't work. We used "bio-chips"(pvc pipe cut into 3 to 4 inch pieces w/ holes drilled into them. We've only had the pump running 2 wks now and it is clearing up although not as fast or efficient as the lava rock it looks like. It will soon be time to put it all up but I hope to try the lava rock next spring. Our local pond expert is very depressing for the winter around here. They say we won't see the fish all winter. I'm hoping our fish like us enough to grace us w/ there presence off and on all winter. Again you have a great pond page and it's one of my favorite places on the web. Keep up the good work. By the way my husband has decided to add a second pond to ours now!!! Dirts Lady@aol.com

Building a Pond Letters
Excellent - in regards to the lady who found a good price 32 cents I believe, she did not mention as to the thickness be it 10 mil, 20, 30 or 45. do you know what mil she is getting for that price. thanks for the reply to jamesjodie@aol.com

Building a Pond Letters
Excellent - just recently found out about a new prefilter material that I just started using. Its fibreglas screening. Its much cheaper than brushes, and works great. I am using it in a prefilter chamber before a bio filter tower. I bought a 25' roll for 10 bucks, and its well worth it.

Excellent - i am writting in regards to your filter system. you said that there is too be a drain in the bottom of the barrel. Does the drain have a plug in it to stop the sediments from draining out. And the 2nd question, is the discharge pipe, does it go back into the pond directly, or can you use it to run your waterfall. and 3rd question, when cleaning out the barrel, how is that done. please explain this to me as clearly as possible. i know it may sound funny but i have been having trouble keeping my pond clean. my e-mail address is shaskell@netrover.com

Diminishing Freedoms
Excellent - ...I've printed it out and am passing it on...and keeping a copy for the guy down the street who complained about the color of our barn...it wasn't one on the cities "accepted" colors...

Diminishing Freedoms
Excellent - You're going to love this. A new next door neighbor had moved in when I returned to my residence in Michigan after 5 years in another state. For 10 years here, I had 2 noisy teenagers and 3 cats - one a favorite in the neighborhood. So my kids are grown and I move back with 1 cat. Now I get a neighbor who calls the city because my cat is going to destroy her $100 plants (oh, yeah). Then the bitch calls the city on me and says I am operating multiple family dwelling in a single family neighborhood, when my son and daughter-in-law moved here from out of state and stayed with me for 3 weeks while looking for a place to rent. She's tricky, 'cause she doesn't tell me first. The cat shit she parked at my front door - was probably not my cat's shit, because after I gave him away, another unneutered beast that looked like mine kept using her front yard for a latrine. On the suspicious visiting family members, I get a tag from the city on my front door when I come home from work. Is this the future????? I am sure your readers can come up with all sorts of hostile things developing in their neighborhoods. We just can't talk to each other any more, apparently. We have to call in the troops, everytime some little thing ticks us off. So it isn't JUST government that is diminishing our freedoms, we are not cutting each other any slack anymore.

Election Reform Proposals
Excellent - Gosta, Really a good site. I intend to read several of the above items. It must be a good feeling to know that you are able to draw attention to the things you care about in such a positive way. How do you promote the site? How do people find it? Are you listed under the various topics you present in the search engines? I am not sure how it works. Only comment I have is regarding an open bias you have...and it IS your home page so you get to have your bias (smile) but I think you are limiting people who might have good contributions to make by eliminating the university types. All an advanced degree is is a method of gathering information. (you have one yourself, just not sponsored by a universtiy, but equivalent I am sure in information gathered) Anyway, the time some have spent gathering such information can add to yours and vise-versa. But, anyway, I admire you for DOING this...so many just talk. Is it expensive to maintain? Don't you dare give up your morning read...I miss more of your comments. Bev

Election Reform Proposals
Pretty Good - Have you checked out the Libertarian Party? They have voluntarily refused company/PAC money, and their candidate for President (Harry Browne) is the first Presidential candidate in history to qualify for federal matching funds and REFUSE them. If you want more information, feel free to check out my page at http://www.voy.net/~rhood, the Libertarian Party page at http://www.lp.org/, or Harry Browne's campaign page at http://www.HarryBrowne96.org/ - if you haven't made up your mind which candidate to vote for, you might find some interesting information there.... Oh, if you want to respond to this, I'm rhood@voy.net (like you couldn't figure that out from the home page URL).

Email from Anal Orifi
Excellent - Hello Dear, Just tuned in to get your web address for Keith Goetting from the County. Thought I'd drop down to see what other junk you've written about me and low and behold, I find you've included a private meassage from me to you on your site. Not that I would take a single work back but, if you want to get the facts straight, I have only gotten one grant from NMFS in 19 years, and the quote from you was verbatim. I wouldn't fabricate a complement. Later....Flimmy

Email from Anal Orifi

Excellent - Yeah that's the way to shake things up Gösta! But man the Norwegians are gonna be pissed. Maybe they *used* *to* *be* polite and whimpy and subserviant but they "ain't" no more -- check out the High North Alliance (guess you didn't get around to it before?) and e-mail me your snail-mail address: I have a video you'll thank me for someday. I'll be back home in Sac tomorrow night, looking forward to your reply as usual (and REALLY ENJOYED this exchange with Crutchfield)! Signed "Your secret admirer" (tonight, anyway)

Excellent - good Gösta Anders

Just Okay - a buddy of mine said he'd seen an exchange with Dave Crestin here, now that would have been worth reading. BTW, i was vaguely disappointed not to have recieved a response to my note to you a month or so ago, after i read some of you stuff. it was (IMHO) a serious response questioning the contrast between your position on ITQs and on Russian land reform. so when i heard that you had added an email from the enemy, i thought maybe thats were my note had ended up. signed: a dingleberry dfraser@olympus.net

Food Chain
Bleech - bitch this is bad

Food Chain
Just Okay - Hi, You have added in a few apples and prunes where there should be bananas. Algae, Macrophytes, and some large proportion of picoplankton are plants. They don't "eat" they just create biomass from nutrients. Picoplankton and bacteria are puzzling, in that they mey not do anything except clean up after the meesy eaters, or one another. The trusty Rule of Thumb is that there are 5 trophic levels, each doing somewhat as you have put into play. Meaning 1 unit of Apex Predator represents about 100 thousand units of primary production, presuming that they only eat one level bvelow themselves. Tunas, and othet large fishes often filter feed, as well as gobling down fishes, making them somewhat better adapted to oceanis systems, where the next fish trhat you encoiunter may be your own species, or close... Yellowfin tuna in the eastern Pacific: another small thunnid comprises about half the diet. By catching 200,000 tons of Yellowfin each year, there are about 2 million tons of the other species left behind, to gobble down what might have been shared amongst small yellowfin. Think aboiut it. Cheers, gsharp

you wrote: - Just looking, but if I was planning a pond this would be a regular stop; I'm looking for the exact type of info, bur re: constructing a ground level deck with a fountain. Wish me luck! Good Luck! You can "thank me" by going to: http://www.exit109.com/~gosta/parc.sht and "Voting" and I need your opinion on PARC (particularly criticism). Glad you you found the page useful. Don't forget to let me how you make out with your pond. Good luck .................Gösta

Food Chain
Pretty Good - Gosta, "Macrophytes", in the sea, are mostly algae and both of those are plants. They make food from sunlight and nutrients. (Sunlight isn't normally counted as a nutrient.) Some picoplankton (and nanoplankton) and bacteria make their food as plants but I think others live off detritus -- bits of broken down plants and animals, plus all the stuff they release into the water. So the apex predators are about level 5, not level 10. (The highest number used in ecosystem modelling seems to be 4.6 but big individuals of the apex species might average 5.5, so 5 sounds good.) The 1:10 business works on land with warm-blooded animals. In the sea, the ratio for biomass (weight alive at any one time) is about 1:1. However, the bigger animals live longer, so the ratio for production (amount of new material produced in a year) is higher. However, it isn't 1:10. Maybe 1:5. So one ton of marine apex predator is supported by one ton of plants, but each new ton of apex predator needs about 250 new tons of plants. Those plants are mostly very small. So one new seal may mean the deaths of huge numbers of tiny green plants, but that's a part of the calculations that you haven't included. Cheers, Trevor Kenchington

Food Chain
Pretty Good - It was a good page but I'm not into fish. I was looking for a food chain on chimpanzees. If you know of any please contact me at kng_leo@bellsouth.net or _Shawn_M_@yahoo.com I need this info before 5-3-98 thanks

Excellent - Mr. Lovgren, your thoughts are excellent. I too don't understand why farmers are subsidized. I think the market will determine what people should do for a living. If the market is strong enough to support farming, there will be enough interest for people wanting to farm for a living. If not, then there won't be. Anyway, I agree with your opinion, and I don't mind the sarcasim. However, if you are really trying to get those opposed to your way of thinking to agree with you, you may want to take a more serious and thought provoking approach. Now I haven't had much experience dealing with elected officials, but I do know that I get much better results when asking people, with a serious mind, thoughtful questions, and letting them answer the obvious. It gives them a feeling of respect and may begin a dialogue. Who knows, they may be responding back to your comments, and I'm just a naive individual that thinks people won't want to spend time communicating with some one that doesn't seam to be wanting to develop a serious and respectful dialogue. I also know you have mentioned that you don't pull any punches. You have made it very clear to me that you are what you are, and I respect that. As a matter of fact, I appreciate the sarcasim, but it may not be the best approach if you are wanting some of these people to really listen to what you have to say. Again, I agree with your comments, and I appreciate your sarcasim. I just think your cause is so great that I'm hoping the right people that need to hear and listen to your messages are not being personally offended and would want to develop a serious dialogue with you. Please let me know if your messages are getting through to the people that have power to make changes in our government. By the way, I did vote again and would like to see PARC funded. Thanks for your comments. Sincerely Yours, Rob Carrier

Get Rich Quick
Excellent - it is to bad that the people of this country have to much food to eat and therefore it so cheap that you you can afford this computer to make a FOOL out of your self. The american farmers are the most efficent and the hardest working people in this great country. So next time you go to the grocery store please think about where all that came from and how little the farmer who grew that food was paid for it.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - The item above was vey well put together I thought it was great. I am doing a research paper on gun control, I think that this info will help me a lot. thank you.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Add me to the list of people who have defended themselves and others without firing a shot. The last time at Hi Mountain campground,Los Padres National Forest,S.L.O. county,CA Fortunately, one of the pair of trouble makers, took the early hints I'd given in a peacfull, sidelong way,to show I had a handle on the situation and a firm grip on reality. If I'd shown weakness,or been unarmed,I really do believe things WOULD have gotten ugly.I think these guys were armed, probably with at least 1 handgun, though it was hard to tell which guy was more dangerous. The women that I was with, and I both agreed that these guys were probably either crankster gangsters or drug cops. The vibes can be similar. The older of the two realized,as much as anything from my earlier, plain statements, that I wasn't to be taken lightly.Still,I listened without comment, while the younger or the two"talked shit",oh,for about an hour, until he threatened to rape the women I was with, and me too!My concern was, that after"talking" so much,he may have felt compelled to act,or look a fool to his older companion.I've been in enough conflicts to know that quite often, young men "talk themselves up",or into a state as a prelude to action. He could have said whatever he wanted,I suppose, but no one should have to be his victim, just so that he could get his sick ya,yaas. When the guns(noisely, with much grumbling, cursing, checking and chambering(!)came out of my truck, the older of the pair, was listening, and was able to get his friend to shut the fuck up!After some verbal back and forth,(they were feeling me out)the younger asked,"so what kind of gun do you got?"After a long pause,I answered,"which one?",with as much malice and disgust as I could muster.I didn't want to shoot them.I wanted them to stop before I HAD to shoot.I've seen bullet holes in people, and I'ts not funny. This happened at night,it was dark when these jokers pulled into the campsite next to me.As

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Doing research for a paper, Great source thanks a load. tepker@family-net.net

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - EXCELLENT hardly does justice, but it is as high as your rating system goes -----

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Go for it man!!! Let the truth ring loud!! I've owned a gun since I was a tadpole and haven't killed anyone yet. I have a conceiled weapon permit and feel as if I have one up on the bad guy, or at least am on an even playing feild!!

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Good page with lots of useful facts.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Great facts. I was looking for a page that gave such facts to refute gun control advocates. If you wouldn't mind I would like to use some of your figures in a paper I have to write for one of my college courses. In addition, where did you get all of your figures or data. I would like to get more information on this. Other than the NRA (of which I am a member), I wouldn't know where to get more info. Thanks, Mat French mofrench@ccgate.hac.com

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - How can they come to any other conclusion? The facts speak for themselves! Well, it's rather easy... kidneys.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - I loved it.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - I still think the main reason to advocate gun control is to make it easier for the government (or a faction) to control everything else.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - Thanks for the info. I am currently attending college and am doing a report on gun control. I used some of the info on this page in my report to show the ineffectiveness of G.C. Don't worry though, I footnoted and gave you credit for the info!

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - This article was an excellent piece of literature that stated good points against gun control. I am very anti gun control myself and appreciate good authors like you making the points I feel clear. Thanks.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - We are now battling a madatory trigger lock ordinance here in Springfield Ma. (USA). The ordinance would make self defence with a firearm nearly impossible. Your site has helped me prepare for Thursdays debate. Thank you, Scott jscott13@map.com

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - excellent news

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - good to finally see a pro-gun control site. Thanks.

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - if you are such a smart guy on gun control then why aren't you against it for it is clear that gun are one of the leading causes of murders?

Gun Control Argument
Excellent - very good

Gun Control Argument
Just Okay - Have pro's and con's of gun control

Gun Control Argument
Pretty Good - Crap Japan is a police state. You should live in peace for a few years and you'd quickly change your mind. Where there are rights, there are responsibilities. "In Florida, since 1987, they have issued over 300,000 permits to carry concealed weapons. About 20 have been revoked for a violation with a firearm." That is ALOT! Those twenty people could have killed twenty people. I'd seriously have a look at that. If I commit murder, I expect to go to jail no matter where I am. The more guns you have the more deaths you have, it's as simple as that. Their cops help with directions and return stolen bikes - rarely do they make arrests. They are peacekeepers rather than cops, and they treat you with more respect than you'd ever find here, no matter what you may think or say. They may have the "power" to beat hell out of you, but they certainly don't abuse it. Americans blow my mind with their "rights, rights, rights" without an ounce of concern for personal responsibility or human lives. It's like, you don't teach peace by publizing war. You don't reduce crimes by increasing the average idiots access to guns. Case closed.

Pond
No-Above - I am impressed with the size and apparent detail of the site . It is now bookmarked on my desktop for future referance . When I get more time I intend to look at it closer . My past experience with pond building for myself started in 1964 and since then I have learned alot . I do however prefer learning from other peoples' mistakes rather than my own so I try to read what I can when I can . As I glanced through your article I found myself agreeing and relating to what you were saying . It is presently after 2:00 am as I write this brief note and as you may have noticed by now from my spelling , etc. I am very tired , but thankyou for placing this big and impressive site in the net for me to bump into . Thanks again , Gary L Melton dailyfax@ados.com Scappoose , Or. ---- Near Portland

Gun Control Argument
Pretty Good - It should give more info

Gun Control Argument
Pretty Good - you've done very well. There are excellent sites on Canadian crime stats that demonstrate some of the lies behind Canadian gun control, including an excellent refutation of the 'Seattle-Vancouver' study and much much more (great comparison between Canadian and U.S. border states where the Canadian homicide stats are actually double those of the U.S. states and so on). All in all a great collection of info.

Is there any info here on it, or was it a bum search? I can't seem to locate anything. Oh, my website is at http://www.geocities.com/WallStreet/Floor/7056/ PS. I'm always looking for hints to increase traffic on my site. How did ya get that much in such a short time. Yeah, I know -- with a great site. But there are a Lot of great sites. Joey and his cancer
Excellent - Browsing to understand what being diagnosed with Pancreatitus means to me. This was the first site. Not a drinker or drug user, a congenital condition caused mine. From this perspective, I found this site incredible and beyond excellent. Your relationship with Joey is a gift for all of us. Your writing was, to me, a great delight. No training or eductation in any kind of writing, I know what strikes me! This was entirely a pleasure. I hope to someday bump into another piece like this wherein your story is told. Actually, I would be willing to bump into anything you have written. I wonder if I have a friend to write for me?

Joey and his cancer
Excellent - I RECENTLY DEALT WITH PANCREATITUS DURING MY THIRD PREGNANCY. I WILL TELL YOU THAT IT IS THE MOST PAIN I HAVE EVER HAD. MY PROBLEM WAS BROUGHT ON BY GALLBLADDER DISEASE. MY GALLBLADDER HAS BEEN REMOVED AND THE PANCREATITUS HAS CLEARED UP. IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE DEALING WITH THIS CONDITION, PRAY FOR THEM. IT IS SHEER PAIN.

Joey and his cancer
Excellent - I have a wife with "unexplainable pancreatitus." I guess that means they don't know how she got it, or where it's going to lead her. I would be interested in knowing if anyone has provided you with more medical data on this disease. Also, I rated this as excellent, which is usually a rating I reserve for "couldn't be any better." In this case it's true because it was the only thing I could find, but, I would sure like to have more information and know if anyone contributed any meaningful comments. Mostly, I'm very pleased to see that someone would take the time to do something to try and reduce the suffering others will have to go through, even though it's too late for themselves. - Syd England sengland@srqa02.jsc.nasa.gov

Joey and his cancer
Excellent - My wife's previous husband died of pancreatic cancer. He was a hard worker who smoked and drank heavily. He came down with the big C after he had quit drinking for a few years. My high school buddy has pancreatitus, he asked me to look it up on the computer for him. You were the first info I found, and not too hopeful at that. This pancreas thing looks bad.

Joey and his cancer
Excellent - my grandmother , age 78, is in the final stages of this horrible thing.

Joey and his cancer
Excellent - thanks!

Joey and his cancer
Pretty Good - My sister was recently admitted to our ICU with ACUTE Panreatitus...which can be caused(and most COMMONLY is by a bout of heavy drinking or heavy eating) but can also be caused by a high triglyceride level...which was the cause in her case. It is not only fatal if not treated ASAP but as in her case caused sever damage to most of her surrounding organs including causing her colon (most of it anyway) to die, it had to be removed, and we are still waiting to see if the damage to her small intestine will end out killing her. Numorous other organs were afffected ...her kidney also shut down and she was on dyalysis(?). Im sorry for the loss of your friend....schuster@polarnet.com

Joey's Letters
Excellent - I have been diagnosed with acute pancreatitus, and I am currentley being treated with Viocase (32 a day) and (1) Prilosec. Ive had the condition for 2 years, test showed sludge from the gall bladder as the probable cause , I have not had the gall bladder out. My last attack was in dec. of 97. One thing I have noticed in the last year is an increase of burping and excess gas that I didnt have before. I try to eat no fat type foods when possible, but I still have an occassional beer. The gall bladder seems to be the constant denominater as to the cause. I was wondering if anybody has this same symptom with gas. Thanks for you help. RThomp1958.com

Bleech - You really need to have pictures of clams on your page. It sucks without it. Suck it up, get a picture of a clam, and put it on your shitty page. thank you.

Keiretsu
Excellent - An excellent, well addressed topic. Fascinating reading; I have made similarly intricate (private)observations in past, nevertheless your anecdotal info and metaphors were riveting. I will say I thought this was an individual reflection on the topic-didnt realize till end this was an org. In light of that I'll add a critical note( but only because I feel an org. has the resources, and presumably, mission to include these): it could have in conclusion suggested practical methods for americans (and japanese who feeled stifled by the Keiretsu system) for circumventing the entrenched system. They must exist; there have always been pioneers breaking through any type of system, successfully, eventually creating new systems. Nevertheless, a great read. By the way, I stumbled across this "tract" searching for exactly that; I am initiating trade w/ smaller japanese firms in hopes of making an end-run around this system. Keiretsu
Excellent - This article offers the rare insight of an American into the Japanese economic system. Japan, although widely considered a partner of US, is actually the biggest enemy of free market economy. Her nominal tax is low for most imported goods, but her mammoth economic networks will not allow them to be imported. America and Asia are Japan's dumping backyard.

Keiretsu
Excellent - add simple explain what is keiretsu.

Marijuana Argument
Bleech - This was the shitest piece of bullshit ive ever laid my eyes on.

Marijuana Argument
Bleech - You need to think about the society today, if you want to hide you ganja sell you are so dumb. that is why people want to legalize it so you don't have to hide when smoking and sellig. Me as a person who smoke the ganja doesn't want to hide it.So think real hard about what you say and then talk about the ganja.!!! e_mail me if you want and do fuck with me by sending stupid shit. Marijuana Argument
Excellent - At first your page appeared to be aimed toward continued marijuana illegallization. But later as you turned it around to make your point, the truth hit even harder. Marijuana should be legalized. Good work.

Marijuana Argument
Excellent - Good start, Gosta. Here's one more: I am the 6 time violent criminal who relies on the system keeping the drug users behind bars so that I get an early release. Take Care, Mike p.s. I've voted!

Marijuana Argument
Excellent - Great site, see you on TT Iain Thomson

Marijuana Argument
Excellent - Hmm. I've always found marijuania users to be the easiest to sway to my side since if they do get confrontational they tend to forget what they're so mad about and agree with whatever you said that got them mad in the first place. The gov's really missing something here. Typical. Oh, I didn't really read this whole thing, just saw the mention of dope, got high, skimmed through it and found this comment thing. -A no one.

Marijuana Argument

Marijuana Argument

Marijuana Argument
Just Okay - hard to understand!!!!!!!

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - I agree.

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - I liked how you put everything in comparison to somthing

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - I liked the opinions, but was expected actual reasons why we as Americans should or should not support legalization of this substance. You can e-mail me at ls42871@swt.edu

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - YES!! My ex-husband has glaucoma and is already legally blind in one eye. I hope he is taking his "medicine". And I hope if any of our 3 children get it, they take their "medicine". Actually, I think they are not getting it because they already take their "medicine". Which is not a problem for me. The worst family disease we have is alcoholism. Both grandfathers died from car accidents because of it. Both my sons could have lost their lives also in car accidents because of alcohol, my ex-husband, my oldest son, my son'in'law and myself - all are Friends of Bill W now. A little pot never threatened our family or our lives - but the legal drug did - John Barleycorn. So I consider the government's hoopla about marijuana just another form of bullying us into submission. I just don't think MJ is such a BFD by comparison.

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - Your information was good. But not quit what I was looking for.

Marijuana Argument
Pretty Good - each is informative but it needs to hit the higher points to give more of a feeling and a report of what the point is by each person

Excellent - I'll add your site to my links page at PSGA - also i think next board meeting, or maybe sooner i'll give copies of your stuff to our board also finfd interesting is the Clammers 1/2 mil lawsuit - as you may or may not know the entire industry here is being taken over by the Indian Tribes. In the latest shellfish decision the judge rulled that since clams have a free swiming larval stage that this makes them fish. As is any thing else that swims at any stage of it's life cycle, and therefore fall under Tribal Control.

Excellent - Wunderbar! You know that song "I Fought the Law and The Law Won" ? Well, hum it as you look through the Second Judicial District of New Mexico v. Patricia E. McKenna. It's in Weslaw somewhere. The family courts in the State of New Mexico run a closed shop. It's our way or the highway - and after they force you out of your house, take your children, and order you to change jobs - there ain't nothing left. While the judiciary and their cohorts in crime - lawyers, social workers, psychologists, real estate agents and accountants who get their business from the courts - are laughing all the way to the bank, the private citizens are becoming a nation of "walking wounded". How about a form used by the court that says you give up your right to appeal on due process and you didn't sign it - or were you ever informed that it was ordered and entered. One brave, courageous man in the State of New Mexico is fighting pro se right now at every level to regain his Constitutional rights. He says he is a citizen without a country - and that just about sums it up. I will vcheck up on your page - frequently.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Bleech - AS A FREQUENT TRAVELER , USUALLY ON NWA, I FIND THAT THEIR PEOPLE TREAT ME AND MY FAMILY VERY WELL . LIFE IS TUFF AND THEIR'S IS A TUFF BUSINESS. I'D SUGGEST THAT YOU PURCHASE YOUR OWN AIRLINE AND RUN IT THE WAY YOU CHOOSE. YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO DO.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Bleech - I was amazed that such a series of rude letters as yours garnished an apology. You or your son could undoubtedly have handled this without resorting to name-calling

NorthWest Airline Saga
Bleech - If I had been Alfred Checci, I'd have cordially invited you to never again patronize NorthWest Airlines after your first letter.

NorthWest Airline Saga

Excellent - I have flown NW for many years and I am in the process of analyzing what is going on with this airline. We are all generally aware of the many problems facing the industry, whether one reads USA Today and/or Wall Street Journal. My problems are certainly less immediate and much less of a personal impact than yours were. Having read your account, I get a sinking feeling that my issues would not qualify for the level of pap and dribble that you were subjected too. On the other hand, without perseverance, they will simply get away with it on all levels -- so keep up the good fight. I do not know your next move, if any, but a letter to your congressperson may help, as well as, a well placed letter to the DoD, President etc.

NorthWest Airline Saga

NorthWest Airline Saga
Excellent - I read your story while searching for a web page that would compile such stories in an effort to get some competition in MSP for air travel. Numerous of us in NWA hubs are the butt of many NWA jokes. Typically they catch us in Detroit and use our airplane to carry real passengers placing MSP passengers on broken planes to be cancelled shortly after other flights have departed. As you must know NWA complaint levels are going up at about the same rate as their profits. I am hoping to lure some other airline into our market to cash in on lots of pent up hatred. If you are aware of such a page or would like some horror stories from NWA's hometown let me know. Regards, Mark Schneider mschneid@cdtl.umn.edu

NorthWest Airline Saga
Excellent - I wish I could express how refreshing it is to learn about someone standing up for what they think is right in a world full of yes-men. I thought your letters to both S.O.B.'s at NW were very much deserved. Policy or not, Keith should have been allowed to fill a vacant seat since he held a valid reservation, even if the current one had been canceled. I have been many places with many different airlines. I must admit that I have never been treated this way and should I be, the person or persons responsable would find themselves in unwilling possession of a second anal orifice. I hope you also reported this incident to the Better business Bureau and anyone else related to the airline industry that would listen. (FAA and NTSB to name two) Bravo and keep on fighting. :) You always have moral support at cody@shreve.net and please let me know how this is proceding.

Most horrific = AA + BA marriage. Guess we need to kiss airlines' orfices and be thankful to pay for their non-service.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Excellent - Somewhat recently I was faced with a problem created by billing policy changes in my phone service. My provider, General Telephone (GTE), had implemented a policy that places a monthly "credit line" or limit on toll and long distances calls. This program is call "Toll Block" and it works much like a credit card. When you have reached you dollar limit or "credit line", the system automatically cuts off your ability to make any further toll calls until such time that a payment is made against that balance. For most residential users, this program might not impact their normal phone use practices. In my case, however, as a self-employed Sales Representative whose territory is Latin America, I was given a $200.000 credit line when my average monthly phone bill is $800.00. What this meant is that I could conceivably have my toll call privileges cut off 3 to 4 times a month, thus forcing me to send several payments each month or be faced with not being able to run my business effectively. After going through the normal channels to dispute this new policy, like you, I found myself totally frustrated and feeling that I needed to reach someone of authority. Thus, I conducted a search on the internet, found GTE's website and obtained the names of the top company officers. I proceeded to write both the CEO and President of Operations to present my case. Realizing how big GTE is, (perhaps even larger than NW Airlines), I never expected anything more than a form letter reply. Much to my surprise, within a week I received a phone call from the President's secretary who told me that her boss appreciated my letter and had asked her to investigate the matter. While a phone call was a very pleasant surprise, I honestly didn't expect to hear from them again. Lo-and-behold, I subsequently received a letter from the head of Customer Service informing me that the "Toll Block" program was being removed from

Just Okay - Although I can empathize with your sons' and your situation, I have had wonderful treatment when I missed a flight and was immediately put on the next flight, twenty minutes later. This enabled me to make all connecting flights. Also, during winter travel when planes couldn't fly, all our travel plans were rescheduled, the same day, and we were upgraded to first class, all four of us, for the longest portion of the trip. I do not think that this should diminish your experience in any way, I merely wanted to show a different side. Thank you for letter.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Just Okay - I fly Northwest All the time and I have never had any problem with their services.I am working on my Commercial pilot certificate and would like a job with NWA.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Just Okay - With all due respect Mr. Lovgren your comments and dismay over the situation (and your insistence that Mr. Checci could somehow have solved the problem for you) is a sign of a complete misunderstanding of how corporations work. It also assumes that systems are perfect, which they are not. For the hundreds of thousands of passengers that an airline handles there are bound to be problems. The fact that you had no problems with United seemed to be more of a "fluke" than a direct act of concern on their part. Don't misunderstand me -- the process was handled incorrectly and the staff should have been able to help your son solve the problem. But the only part that would involve Mr. Checci is the fact that there is something wrong with his organization that would prevent the staff from finding a solution (or feeling that they needed to find a solution). If you really wanted to get at a solution, you should have been dealing with the point of control (which is what the corporate staff was forced to do and then relay the information to you) -- deal with the LAX staff. Corporations are not the same as small businesses. The corporate leaders are responsible for the financial existence of the organization (the stock process and general performance). Day to day operations is something they are aprised of, but not something they are involved with. The mental model you were operating under shen you sent a letter to Mr. Checci, assuming that he could help solve your problem, is a very outdated one. Certainly, it might have been useful to CC: him on letters, but it didn't seem to me that you ever discovered who the real point of contact/control was (thus the dilemma in response/timing to solve your problem). Bottom line is that for all your fussing over the delays in response -- you were responsible for those delays by not recognizing the "appropriate" authorities to direct your concerns to. The president of the cor

NorthWest Airline Saga
Pretty Good - As an MBA student (almost finished) I find this letter very educational. What I've learned, is that I never want to manage like Mr. Checci and Mr. Faust. The problem with big companies nowadays, is that they forget the simple, basic, #1 fact - you should always put the customer first. Mr. Lovgren, I believe you are correct when you state that the true problem here, is that the "corporate attitude" is flowing down from the top.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Pretty Good - Good thing I don't fly Northwest. Thanks for the info, I'll avoid them like the plague.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Pretty Good - I came across your article on a Search I did on Al Checchi. He's running for governer in California and I wanted to see what info was out there on him. Your experience with NW Airlines was MOST informative. I will mention that the person who gave the reply you posted above is correct in his comments on what the responsiblities of the "upper-management" of a large corporation consist of...and your comment that the implication of his comments is "chilling" is also right on the money. I cannot tell you how many arguments I have gotten into (usually with economists or business major-types) who insist that the ONLY reason for a business to exist is to make money for its owners, stock-holders, etc. That the fact that a product is produced or services rendered is completely inconsequencial. This, IMHO, is exactly what is wrong with business today...when a company that is responsible for the well-being of thousands (maybe millions?) of human beings, be it the insurance industry, the health-care industry, or a major air carrier, is more interested in making more profit this year than last (and for what? how much money can you spend in a year?)...that is extremely chilling. These are the types that give capitalism a bad name.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Pretty Good - I hope NW has gotten better since 1991. I'm afraid to find out.

NorthWest Airline Saga
Pretty Good - I too have had bad experiences with NorthWest to Japan. There has been a steady downward trend in their quality of service since 1990. I have avoided travel with them since spring of 1995 when I was misinformed by travel agency personnel changing the return date of a ticket issued in Japan (I still have it - NW refused to honor it), and again when I was misinformed by the NW ticketing agent who issued my frequent flyer ticket (which I had to use to get home to Japan) as to the flexibility of destinations/travel dates once the ticket had been issued (nil). I sympathise, having lived the "North Worst" experience myself. FYI, the first time I heard the words "North Worst" was in Japan in 1992. Surprising, because although the Japanese have no tolerance for poor service, they rarely complain... Regards, Richard Malkoski rico@provide.net

Pretty Good - I was disappointed to see the date and that there was no further update. It just seems like it was maybe another jousting at windmills endeavor.

Excellent - GH, Here I am again... Mobile is on the Gulf Coast. The Gulf is essentially a closed body of water. It doesn't flush itself much at all. Mobile Bay is a small inlet on the Gulf of Mexico. I know about those anaerobic periods in the Gulf. They're called jubilees. Every summer, when conditions are just so, the bay goes anaerobic near its western beach (the yuppies who live there call it the Eastern Shore). The fish (mostly flounders, shrimp and crabs) literally come out of the water for oxygen, and the people scoop them up and carry them home in whatever they have handy. This has been happening since before the area was settled by the French in 1702. The indians in the area used to run down the beach, blowing a conch shell to announce the event. The French, when the first witnessed it, called the event a "Jubilee." The point being, biologists have long since know about the phenomenon, and have known that it occurred in a number of places along the Gulf. It also occurs in Back Bay near Biloxi, MS; on Ochlochnee Bay near Tallahassee; and in a number of areas in Texas and Louisianna where there are inlets cut into the northern coast of the Gulf. It is a completely natural part of the ecology here, and the conditions have to be just right. You have to have plenty of heat, very warm water, a gentle east wind and a low tide. Get all four conditions, and you get a Jubilee. I'm enjoying your site tremendously. Regards, David dluckie@datasync.com

Excellent - Hi Gosta, Thanks for your comments on my pond. You asked where I live. I live a few miles south of Bellingham, WA (off Interstate 5) in Alger if that shows on your maps (main claim to fame is the widely known Alger Tavern). The stones are a good idea. As I think about it, the unfiltered pond would be a useful source of nutrient-rich water for my garden. Since the garden is downhill from the pond I could get a siphon set up permanently and water the garden with that. Green water is fine in that sense. I guess we'll just see how many fish it supports. About the Parc idea: It sounds good to me. A question I have is what will motivate the borrowers to borrow to decrease their polluting ways? One thing that has worked very well and at virtually no public cost to decrease pollution is the law that requires industries to publish the emissions they are responsible for. Great efforts have been expended to get off the publicly known position as the nations top pollutor in a given industry. These lists really give local groups some heavy artillery in getting their local industries to clean up their act. The result is a race for the bottom, which is good. Maybe that can be linked to the loan program which could aid these companies in their PR quest. Alternatively, it seems to work to mandate pollution levels and let the industries figure out for themselves how to reach them, using all their ingenuity and resources. Mandating the means is not very efficient at all. The main point is that they need some reason or reasons to participate, to take on debt and to upset the routine. The Parc FAQ does not connect to anything on your site. I once had the idea of a Zero Pollution Project (ZiPP), which would set the goal of a way of living that produced (guess what?) zero pollution. That means things like finding alternative means and procedures to do what we do anyway. These are available if anybod

The PARC proposal is an excellent place to start. Pollution restrictions are tough in the states as compared to other nations. If this can work here, other nations may take steps toward instituting similar proposals. Well done!

Thanks again for your work here. You have been an ispiration for those of us who want to use the net to effect some positive changes. Regards, Michael S. Serio

Excellent - Put more facts and specific examples. They are more effective than just your personal experiences in persuading people. I am sorry about what we are doing to the seas. I am also sorry that you may be correct that it is too late. In every system, there is a point beyond which change is no longer restorable. It will not be the end of the earth, but it may be the end of much of life as we know it. Thank you for trying to do something about it. jimlynch@vt.edu

PARC Support
Excellent - Thanks Gosta. You've thought up an interesting solution (or hopefully a catalyst for the actual solution) to a serious problem. I'll pass along your URL to some friends I know who are more actively involved in marine issues (and live in the USA). I'm involved in on-farm research, some of which is directed towards making agriculture in southwestern Ontario more environmentally responsible. As you say, it all runs off into the lakes and eventually makes its way into the oceans. I'd like to see PARC take off as an international organization, similar to the International Joint Commission that was set up to help clean up the Great Lakes. If I can come up with any Canadian representatives to add to your list of people to contact, I'll email them to you. Regards, George Schell (a frequent Hotwired lurker and occasional poster when time permits)

Excellent - This page again was very informative!!! You have thought long and hard ove your solution and I was impressed!! I didn't send a letter to congress mind you.....I don't think they would care about some Canadian writing in, although the problem affects all of us. Even here in the Northwest of B.C. have noticed our fish stocks dwindling! My husband is a sport fisherman, and usually now catches and releases his fish. Keep up the good work!!! Excellent - This page shows thought! A time limit on the initial funding tax?! Man, I like that! Unfortunately, Washington DC has never heard of such a thing. I will write my representatives on behalf of this cause and the solutions presented here. Michael S. Serio msserio@ibm.net

Excellent - Very interesting. Pollution is a big problem and needs a solution. This is one of the best ones I have seen. Good luck.

PARC Support
Excellent - Your proposal at taxes is faulty and abusive. Government is already too intrusive. All efforts should be volentary and your presentation goes a long way to getting there. If Jane Fonda's husband can donate one billion dollars to the UN, perhaps he and others can scrape up the funds you need.

Just Okay - Far better than your usual blatting, old goat. You have the nucleus of a good idea here.

PARC Support
Just Okay - Hi, A few comments about your effort . . . You have obviously put a lot of time and effort into researching and planning your proposal. It seems to be tempered with at least some sense of political reality. For me, this was a 'first exposure' (outside of the media stuff which is tough to put into perspective), so I'm not ready or able to comment of the viability of your proposal. I've spent a half century making my livlihood in technical areas so I can appreciate your hypotheses about alterations in the 'Basic Sout' recipe being at the root of the fishing problem. It is still a hhpotheses and it seems to me you should be proposing some sort of test that will verify the correctness of your idea. So far, you have just appealed to my intuition. Not good enough in a world where there are a thousand other things competing for $$$$$$$. That's it for my first impressions. I appreciate that your threatened livlihood was a powerful motivator for your ideas. That doesn't mean thay are necessarily correct. Let's see if there is some way we can design an 'experiment' that will test the hypotheses in a convincing way before we start taxing the general population. Good Effort. Keep Trying Dick Colestock rocabea@juno.com

Just Okay - I am not old enough to vote, and I don't have a clue who many of these people are.

PARC Support
Not So Hot - Sorry, Charlie...er, George. I really am not interested in getting involved in the fish issue. I'm enjoying raising a few meager Koi, but I'm frankly not fond of eating fish. Like you, my industry, that of protecting the Redwood (and other)forests of California from the ravages of fire and managing those forests for the future (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) is caught in the middle of significant public debate over exactly how it should be done. From my perspective, however, in the long term scheme of things no matter what we do as humans, we will never control what ultimately happens to planet earth. All of the debate taking place now, whether over fish or forest has no bearing over the millenia. Man did not kill the dinosaurs.

Perfect Storm
Bleech - MAN - YOU ARE LUNATIC, OR FISHED TOO MUCH ..., YOU EITHER LIKE SOME BOOK, AND YOU ARE TOLKING ABOUT IT, OR - YOU DON'T , AND YOU FORGET ABOUT IT... OR -... YOU JUST TOLKING ...!!!???

Perfect Storm
Bleech - You're a parnoid moron, and Sebastian Junger shouldn't have to defeodn his work to you. He has nothing to do with why you seem to be failing in life.

Perfect Storm
Excellent - Enjoyed your review. I am concerned by the emphasis on language. I believe the use of four letter words will slowly become more frequent and am planning the development of a web page to defeat it. Just be assured, they are not prose. However if I am not successful, I will join the fucking crowd and relax.

Perfect Storm
Excellent - Right on old friend.

Perfect Storm
Excellent - What a pleasure to see so much piss and vineger directed at such fertile ground. I thought your initial review was somewhat presumptious of Mr. J's character but his reply seemed to vindicate much of what you said. The claim of "journalist" is typically pandered as a philosophical jab at non-journalist by writers wishing to deny there own subjectivity. For any writer to deny his own subjectivity is to deny their association to the human condition. Lastly, I've had my bouts with journalists inexperienced in the subject they were investigating and concluded long ago it seldom gives them pause. Nice job...and, who knows, perhaps your lashing may give him pause next time. TAD p.s. you don't have to be a fisherman to appreciate the exchange between you and Mr. J.

Perfect Storm
Excellent - Wow! Thanks so much. I hope you have seen my comments in the best books of 1997 Thread. There's a book out there (and probably large financial success) for an alternative look at the storm. You are a helluva writer yourself. Why not give it a try? Sincerely, Richard Pangburn

Perfect Storm
Just Okay - I use foul language quite often myself, but it doesn't belong in your text. It makes you look bad instead of Mr. Junger.

Perfect Storm
Just Okay - The Swede and Junger both comment on each other. What I find even more interesting are the points each make which the other chooses to ignore and not respond to.

Perfect Storm
Not So Hot - You have a narrow, self-serving view of your occupation, which, as expressed in this review, reinforces the baser elements seen in Mr. Junger's recapitulation. And, further, strikes any interest any outsider might have in the survival of the industry -- your review sinks your industry, not Mr. Junger.

Perfect Storm
Pretty Good - It was OK. Mr. Junger had a good point, though.

Polar Worlds
Excellent - Swede, I checked it out. Just more of the same old shit. I thought it was going to be something interesting like Polar Ice cap and its potential for world destruction if it melts. later.....Flimmy

Polar Worlds
Not So Hot - oversimplifies reality. probably because of the simple mindedness of the author. obviously written by someone on the fisherman side of the column who has not relied on the assistance of others (cooperation) to achieve an objective or to make it safely to shore, nor has known a comrade of many years' experience who has drowned because of circumstances beyond that person's control. also does not realize that many who are in the regulating business are doing so out of a sense of public service and could just as easily be making more money selling raincoats in Seattle and would have to put up with a lot less abuse from aggravated fishermen, fired-up conservationists, grandstanding politicians and all other concerned members of the public (it's their fish, don't forget, not yours; consumers pay you simply to bring the fish to them, not to buy something from you that you own; when you fishermen take too much of their fish, it kind of pisses them off too, only they have more of a right to be pissed off at you (and the reglators) for the overfishing problem than you have to be at regulators who are trying to stop overfishing. It's a free country and you can believe and say what you want, but if you don't get with the program you will suffer in your own misery for the rest of your life because the American public is not going to let you rob it of it's inheritance and charge them for it at the same time while you go happily along.

S&L Reform
Pretty Good - The problem here is very simple. Your proposal is a needless complication of the already byzantine tax cose. As far as I am concerned every damned dime any one saves should be allowed to generate tax free income. The notion that the rich would benefit more from this than the middle class doesn't make a rats ass to me. I frankly don't care if Bill Gates or Warren Buffet rakes in an extra billion or two or three. The few thousand I might be able to generate mean a helluva lot more to me than Gate's or Buffet's billions. I may indulge in many sins but envy is not one of them. Envy in our current political system is the distraction that allows the politicians to pick our pockets.

School Thoughts
Excellent - Generally I fully agree with your contempt for academic "education" departments -- you shoulda seen the "Master's Defense" (and the scare quotes are deliberate) I saw the other day. But don't forget that some of us in academia teach real subjects (chemistry, f'rinstance). -- A chemistry professor

School Thoughts
Excellent - I am a teacher and where you say you are referred to as "that fucking Swede" I have no doubt that the Adminstration thinks of me as "that fucking Limey" ...quote "I dont care WHAT they do in New York or wherever you're from" this gem from the Assistant Superintendent who's in charge of personnel. Your observations were quite correct and by the way I also enjoyed the sludge kill story as I am now a pariah in our town for preventing them from sliding in a garbage incinerator without bothering to ask us first. Bollocks to 'em, bureaucratic assholes, the worst kind of cowards. Meanwhile I continue to ignore the academics and State mandates to the best of my abilities, I tell the bad ones exactly what I think no holds barred, I wipe away tears (often the same kid next day) even (hush) occasionally give pats and hugs (obviously a pervert, who cares he's married with three children) and generally do my best to cope with kids who are in 'loco parentis' which Romans would understand as meaning I am in charge of them as if they were mine but I think should mean I'm in charge of them because half of their fucking parents are loco! Cheers mate, keep up the good work. One of my best mates is a waterman, by the way and I'll get him to take a look here one of these days.

School Thoughts
Just Okay - I agree with everything he says. However, I have found that teachers and the school adminsistrators tend to blame parents for the failure of public schools. The problem is that teachers are teaching to diverse a population and not allowed to group students by ability. However, I agree that the teachers should be in control (not the principal). The principal is too anxious to please his superiors and that does not mean parents.

Certainly It is no falacy, that we are also in a galaxy. BUT!!! Where are we? THAT IS THE QUESTION that causes the great obcession. Side Effects of Medicine
Excellent - More help. I have been fighting side effects and the tiredness that comes from hypertension drugs since I was 35. Am now 54 and in much worse physical shape because of inability to come home from work then go to gym to "keep healthy". A nap is a necessity. After a deep drugged interval of sleep, I am in no mood to exercise. This, of course, causes great guilt, since it is up to me to exercise and keep weight down. Beta blockers are especially bad for depression so I keep fighting them off from each doc who suggestes them. It takes about 3 months and I feel like I am dying. My blood pressure is bad, I am locked into a job I love, but with high stress. It is really a downer to always feel so bad because of the medicines. Keep trying to get a forum on this issue. It is about the quality of our life and I'm tired of feeling guilty because of this family inherited trait.

Side Effects of Medicine
Excellent - YOU'RE RIGHT. MOST DOCTORS I DON'T BELIEVE ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE PRESCRIPTIONS ALL THEY DO IS PRESCRIBE, PRESCRIBE, PRESCRIBE. YES, WHEN READING ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS THAT THESE MEDICATIONS CAN CAUSE IS UNREAL. ASK A DOCTOR ABOUT THE SIDE EFFECTS AND EXPECT A LARGER BILL.

Excellent - "Plenty Good Stuff" is right! And I thought I was the only cantankerous curmudgeon left on the planet. I live in Mobile, AL. My grandfather was a commercial shrimper until the day he could not stand on the deck any more. Currently, the battle rages here over the Gulf Red Snapper. The State of Alabama has one of the most aggressive reef creation programs in the country. But the impetus to habitat creation isn't commercial fishing, it's recreation. People spend big bucks to climb onto a charter boat and try their luck at Snapper fishing. Ironically, the commercial fishers have been creating reefs for as long as I can remember. I can still hear my Grandfather cussing those snapper men for not marking a new reef that he tore his nets on. The thing is, the fisheries "experts" are patting themselves on the back for the "come back" of the Snapper. Never mind the fact that they aren't doing anything except the same thing the commercial people have been doing for years. The bastards. I came to your site looking for backyard pond info, and happened across the other stuff. Regards, David dluckie@datasync.com

Tuna Paper
Excellent - I think the paper is reasonably balanced in its presentation. However, there are some issues with regard to the estimation of sustainability of stocks, and their geographic distribution that are, atthe very least, minimally misleading owing to their superficial presentation. If you present information as "fact", you should support it by scientific research references. We all know that ICAAT is hardly "objective" in its positions, and is clearly influenced by domestic and international interest, political and otherwise. All of us would benefit from a greater level of support to scientific inquiry, e.g. aerial photographic estimations, tagging, etc. Above all, no party, recreational nor commercial, has the right to expect that their interests are more legitimate than the others.

Vitamin C Paper
Excellent - Do you happen to know the approximate ascorbic acid blood level (plasma) for healthy guinea pigs or know where to find that data?

Vitamin C Paper
Pretty Good - Hi, I think that you missed several points about the messages in Its About Time, etc... by G.D. Sharp, that was published in the Procedings of the Second World Fisheries Congress. One is that I am MUCH MORE Conservative than you pretend to be. The messaages that Dr. Sharp has been carrying around the world are that there is a real Fisheries System, and it includes all time and space scales, as they pertain to understanding the natural and HUMAN impacts on the balance between people and truly functional ecosystems. Humans have already manipulated them enough to know that they can - and do - extinct species, and as such, fisheries management was a latecomer in the fray for maintaining needed support systems. It is quickly becoming too late, for many components of the global aquatic ecosystem, as people swarm over key habitats, poison their environments, and flush everything downstream for the next victims to enjoy. The science community has been so busy coiled around the funding sources that the problem has outrun them... Analogy: The drunk searching for the dropped keys under the streetlight when they were dropped in the dark around the corner... What does not make any sense is trying to blame any one thing, process or sector for the failures of humanity to make intelligent, self sustaining decisions. Greed, Short-Term Profit Taking, and DENIAL are the basic human traits, paperboys, bankers, on through fishers and farmers, that make this genberations decisions key to the very survival of humankind. Quit looking for whipping boys, and start looking at serious, long-term solutions about how to 1) Slow and then reverse human population expansion; 2) Recoup or rehabiltate critical ecosystem functions (habitat, processes, genetic resilience, etc.); and put a lock on the policies and procedures such that humans get aligned with their finite, slowly running down universe!!! gsharp
