Easy Tape is an "Adding Machine" with a correctible "tape" of up to 999 items. All it does is Add and Subtract, but Boy oh Boy, does it ever Add and Subtract! (It Multiplies and Divides like a calculator too but its real strength is in managing lists).
Easy Tape also comes in handy when budgeting for either exotic vacations at Jamaican and Punta Cana resorts, or relaxing weekend getaways at Cancun all inclusive resorts. Super easy to use. Gee, it's so easy, I don't know where to start. Just put in a number and press ENTER, then put in another number and press ENTER, and so on .... ![]() At the bottom is the Total of those numbers: ![]() In this case 2 entries were made so the Total and the average of the 2 are shown. Okay, so big deal. Well, let's add a few more numbers (notice the pretty rose color of the negative numbers.): ![]() And now we have at the bottom: ![]() A few more statistics about the numbers we ENTERed. Not everybody will have a use for all those but some will. If you are not sure about what any of them mean (Standard Deviation for example) not to worry, just ignore it, Or you can just hover the mouse over it for a second or 2 and an explanation will pop up. ![]() Now let's put in another number but instead of just ENTER, let's press Ctrl ENTER (hold the Control key down while pressing the Enter key) and we'll get a SubTotal for the contiguous (not separated by a blank line) numbers we put in so far appearing next to the last number we put in. (Note - The = key also works the same as Ctrl Enter for this feature.) ![]() This Subtotal tallies up contiguous entries and doesn't affect the Total below. Actually Easy Tape can provide any number of separate "internal" Subtotals just by leaving a blank space between entries: ![]() You've noticed the checkboxes alongside each entry. They provide segregated totals of checked items at the bottom of Easy Tape next to the statistics: ![]() Here's an example of how useful that can be - Itemizing credit card bills. (We all know what a pain that is to see a long list of charges and try to figure out which goes where and who charged what and for what purpose.) With Easy Tape, just enter the charges, make a note (or not) beside each, and check a box alongside the item and get a separate subtotal of checked items. (For example you could have a Tax deductible column, a House column and an Office column to separate out those charges. Or His and Hers columns. Or separate projects. Or ... Up to 5 separate subtotals). Print the tape each month to reference for tax purposes/deductions at the end of the year. Each of the columns can be labeled for printout purposes (And of course Easy Tape can be printed, saved to disk, recalled and all that standard stuff.) Oh, and while we're here, did you notice the Auto Check box? ![]() When that's checked (in green) it automatically fills in the subtotal boxes for you (whichever were checked when it was checked.). You probably won't need it but some accountanting types will appreciate it.. It can be turned on/off with the mouse or Ctl K (a Speed key we'll talk about later.) And while we're on the subject of Subtotals, there's one more. Some folks (those pesky accountants again) like to keep a Running Subtotal while working. Pressing F5 in a blank item gives us a Running Subtotal of all Amounts up to that point (highlighted in that adorable baby blue). ![]() Here's another handy use for Easy Tape. Suppose you bought/sold a bunch of stuff at a yard sale or church bazaar or ... where you had to pay a commission (or sales tax or ...) of say 12.5%. There's a checkbox at the bottom of the list (above the Total) called Auto Add that does just that. (it shows -15% here.) ![]() When checked it automatically adds whatever is in it (in this case -12.5%) to whatever is ENTERED with the result in the Amount and the original number in the Comment.) ![]() Or just click the Auto Add again to stop Auto Adding. (If you prefer not to use the mouse, you can toggle Auto Add off and on with Ctl B.(a Speed key we'll talk about later.)) Now when you F5 to get a Running Total it gives both the total before AutoAdds and the total of the AutoAdds. ![]() And one last feature (not really), you can do mixed calculations on one line just like a calculator. The final product is in the Amount field with the original formula in the Comment field. ![]() If you happen to notice an entry error in the calculation, just press Ctl R to restore the original to edit it. (Try getting your calculator to do that!) ![]() And counter intuitively designed especially for people who are not very comfortable or especially familiar with computers but would have an occasional use or need to handle a list of numbers without the daunting overhead of learning about spreadsheets. Then I realized an awful lot of both groups prefer laptops today and so don't have a keypad or a conventional mouse. So pretty near everything is designed so it can be utilized without a mouse by using speed keys (Ctrl or Alt key combinations, or the function keys F1 - F10). There are quite a few Speed Keys and they are all at your finger tips. For example Click on Help on the Title Bar Menu (or use Ctl H, or Alt H, or F1 - any one will pop up the Help screen): ![]() (Note- this image is clipped narrower to fit on the screen here.) Here are the Speed Key definitions: click on Speed Keys on the Title Bar (or Ctl P or Alt P or F2) ![]() (Note- this image is clipped narrower to fit on the screen here.) So there you have it. There are more options and features in the File and Miscellaneous Menus on the Title Bar at the top but they are all pretty self explanatory. Easy Tape is continually evolving (Oct 2009) so click on the "Check for Updates" (under Miscellaneous) once in a while for new features. Note - It's entirely possible changes/additions in one place in the program unexpectedly affect other places. If you run across any unexpected behavior, please please please Email me (under Miscellaneous). Thank you. Easy Tape is free free free to everyone. However I would appreciate it if you would take just a minute and let me know what you think of it (in the form below or under Miscellaneous). I need feedback regardless of your skill level. Actually the best feedback very often comes from non-computer savvy people. So please take a look at it and let me know what you think. Especially if there is something you don't understand. Or it doesn't work as you think it should. Or there's a feature you would like to see. Or just to say "Hi". Click Here to run (or download) Easy Tape.
